A Flight Attendant's Packing List and Must-Haves for Flying with a Baby

The Ultimate Packing List for Flying with a Baby: Everything You Need for a Smooth Trip

Flying with a baby can be both exciting and a little overwhelming, especially when you’re a frequent traveler like me! As a flight attendant, I’ve learned a few tricks over the years about packing light and staying organized while on the go. But when it comes to flying with my little one, Baby Hudson, things get a bit more complicated. Whether we’re headed for a sunny beach getaway or a quick city break, I always make sure I’m fully prepared to keep things smooth and stress-free.

Here’s our ultimate packing list to make traveling with Hudson easy, fun, and comfortable for both of us. From travel essentials to little luxuries, I’ve got everything covered to make sure Hudson is happy and well-cared for while we explore new destinations together!

For Baby Hudson:

1. Diapering Essentials

  • Diapers: I pack enough for the trip, plus a few extra for emergencies. I prefer disposable diapers for convenience, but if you’re eco-conscious, you can go with cloth diapers too.
  • Wipes: These are a must-have. I go for sensitive wipes for baby’s delicate skin. Also, a small travel-size container to keep in my diaper bag for easy access.
  • Changing Pad: Compact and portable. Many diaper bags come with a built-in changing pad, but if yours doesn’t, I always pack a foldable one.
  • Diaper Bag: A multi-compartment diaper bag makes it easy to stay organized. I love bags that are both functional and stylish, and there are some great options that even look like regular handbags!
  • Diaper Cream: I never leave without this—especially for longer flights where little ones might be in the same diaper for an extended period. And don’t forget a travel sized Bumco for applying the cream! My secret weapon 😉

2. Clothing and Comfort

  • On-Flight Outfit: I always dress Hudson in comfortable layers. He’s a baby, so comfort is key, but I also like to make sure he’s stylish for those airport photos. Think onesies, soft cotton pants, and a light sweater for chilly flights.
  • Extra Outfits: Spills and messes happen! I pack two to three extra outfits for Hudson, including socks, a hat, and an extra jacket or sweater depending on the weather.
  • Swimsuit: If we’re heading somewhere sunny, a swim diaper and baby swimsuit are essential for beach or pool time.
  • Sleep Essentials: I always bring several blankets and make sure that one is always handy for the flight! I also pack his favorite sleep toy to help him feel at home. Sophie the giraffe is his favorite!

3. Feeding Essentials

  • Breastfeeding Supplies: I never leave the house without my hands-free wearable Willow Go breast pumps. I also bring a nursing cover, breast pads, and nipple cream (just in case). I also pack milk bags for easy milk storage if we’re traveling for longer periods.
  • PackIt Freezable Breast Milk Storage Bag. It’s a life-saver for keeping my milk cool and fresh for hours without needing to rely on bulky ice packs. It folds up for easy packing and is perfect for longer trips.
  • Bottles and Formula: Even though I’m still pumping, I make sure I have formula powder in individual packets just in case my supply dips, along with bottles and a bottle warmer if necessary. (A portable bottle warmer is an absolute game-changer while traveling and I’m never without my Tommee Tippee travel warmer!)
  • Travel Bottle Brush Set: A compact bottle brush set is essential for keeping bottles clean on the go. I love the travel-friendly ones that include a small brush for bottles and nipples, making it easy to maintain good hygiene while we’re out and about.
  • Baby Snacks: As Hudson is getting older, I bring a small stash of puffed snacks, baby food pouches, and a couple of sippy cups.

4. Health and Hygiene

  • Baby Medicine Kit: I pack baby Tylenol, teething gel, baby sunscreen, and any prescribed meds that Hudson might need.
  • Baby Hand Sanitizer: Airports and public places can get pretty germy, so I carry alcohol-free hand sanitizer to keep his hands clean without drying out his skin.
  • Baby Skincare: I always pack gentle baby lotion and soap for baby Hudson. I love this Travel Size pack from Honest Company!

5. Travel Gear

  • Stroller: We travel with a compact, foldable stroller that’s easy to take through security!
  • Baby Carrier: Whether we’re exploring a city or navigating busy airports, a baby carrier is invaluable. I pack a soft-structured carrier that’s both comfortable and compact.
  • Car Seat: For road trips or flying with a lap baby, I bring along a portable car seat. There are some great lightweight options that fold up easily for travel. That’s why we are so happy with our All-in-One Car Seat and Stroller by Doona! We got it in Desert Green but they have several colors to choose from. You can even change out the color for your next baby!
  • Padded Cover for the Doona: We always like to protect the stroller if we check it, so this one has worked out perfectly!

6. Entertainment and Distraction

  • Toys: I bring a few of Hudson’s favorite small toys, such as a soft book, rattles, or a small plush animal to keep him entertained during the flight.
  • Tablet or Music: For a little distraction, especially during longer flights, I download a couple of baby-friendly apps or music playlists.
  • Teething Rings: If Hudson is teething, I pack a few teething toys to soothe him and keep him happy.
  • Noise-Canceling Headphones: These help him block out the noise if its too loud and he evens falls asleep wearing these at concerts and sporting events!

Conclusion

Flying with Baby Hudson has become one of my favorite things. With the right packing list and a little planning, I’m able to stay organized and keep both of us comfortable, no matter where our adventures take us! I hope this packing list helps you as you prepare for your next family trip. Whether you’re flying cross-country or heading to a tropical paradise, having the right gear and essentials can make all the difference.
